How do I describe the effect intermolecular forces have on the melting point of these substances: water, carbon dioxide, and magnesium chloride? I get that the stronger the intermolecular force, the higher the melting point, but I just don't know how to explain it more than that.

the IMF between water is hydrogen bond, between CO2 is van der waal's force, between MgCl2 is inoic bond, which one is strongest, which one is weakest?
