OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

The density of ocean water increases as: pressure decreases. temperature increases. all of the above salinity increases.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So what would happen if you increase the temperature of water?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

So does the pressure?

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

well, think about boiling water... what is happing to water when you boil it?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Temperature increases. XD

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

Well, you would be able to observe steam coming out of the pot, right?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

yep

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So would we say that density is increasing?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Yeah

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

not necessarily. water will keep its density even when boiled. So you can eliminate the temperature answer

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Oh ok :)

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

do you think that pressure plays a role in the density of water?

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Im thinking no.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

You are right.

OpenStudy (brittanyrolfe):

So, if that is the case then we can say that salinity increases the density of water because the salt crystals bind to water molecules which makes the density of water increase because it has more mass than it did with H2O molecules. Now you have H2O+ NaCl

OpenStudy (tylermckinney16):

Awesme :)
