why Mg form Mg(2+) ion generally but not Mg(+)?

If Mg lost only a single electron it would still have a single electron left in the 3s orbital which is a relatively unstable state to be in. Therefore it loses both electrons in the 3s orbital to achieve a noble gas electron configuration
