OpenStudy (lgnd_88):

Can someone explain why tungsten cannot react to carbon to form a melting point?

OpenStudy (lgnd_88):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (rye2581):

tungsten has a melting point of 3422 c its the highest of all metals.

OpenStudy (lgnd_88):

Indeed but it has to react with certain chemicals to reach that point but why can it not react with carbon like most metals

OpenStudy (rye2581):

Owh im sorry I am unsure but I am curious to know so I will watch your post as well.

OpenStudy (lgnd_88):

No problem

OpenStudy (amorfide):

only information I can find is Tungsten cannot be extracted with carbon because tungsten carbide (WC) is formed rather than tungsten. http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/attachment.php?attachmentid=179298&d=1351315666
