Choose which of the following graphs geometrical represent the sum 2+5i+(3-i)
I know the attached graph is the correct answer, but I don't know why, I'd like somebody to explain that to me.
ok, i is "imaginary" but we can still give it value the coordinate system given sets any whole number as the x-axis with unit spacings of 1 whereas the imaginary component is set as the y-axis with unit spacing of i
i may HAVE worded that a bit oddly
Yup, i=sqrt-1 I'm assuming you man that the number that doesn't have an i in it in representation of the x axis, and the number with an i in it is in representation of y axis?
mean* The typos are miraculous
yes, its denoted on the graph well, at least the "i" is x is normally assumed as real number value
Oh yes it was, I can't believe I missed that! Alright
is that it? did i answer your question?
@sooobored I understand it better now but it's not completely clear to me yet, I realize that the line that's close to the i/y axis is a representation of the point (2,5), but I'm not sure what the purpose of the other two lines are.
oh ok, it looks like they're drawn as vectors so the vector <2,5> and the vector <3,-1> and the resulting 3rd vector, is the result of the vector addition
ill draw it in order
starting with the vector <2,5> |dw:1481095138334:dw| not to scale
Gotcha
and then you add the vector <3,-1> from the end of the first vector |dw:1481095186225:dw|
That makes sense!
