Please help. I'm not even sure where to begin with this: Describe the results of Ernest Rutherford's gold-foil experiment and explain how his results changed ideas about the distribution of positive charge within the atom.

This is the experiment in which ER fired something at gold foil expecting it all to go through deviated. What actually happened was that every so often, something didn't go through, but was "reflected" back to the source. And that gave him the idea that there were nuclei, i think. may have been that before that there was teh "plum pudding" model of the atom. Somewhere there's a phrase that puts the experiment in perspective in terms of firing something at a wire mesh or a fog and every so often it comes back. ie there's structure there.
