iuytyuioiuytyuiop:

How are A (mass number), Z (atomic number), and N (number of neutrons) related? a Z = A + N b N = Z + A c A = Z + N d Z = A = N

iuytyuioiuytyuiop:

I'm thinking it's C?

jimthompson5910:

Correct (mass number) = (atomic number) + (number of neutrons) which is the same as saying (mass number) = (number of protons) + (number of neutrons) The atomic number and the number of protons are the same because the number of protons directly and uniquely defines what element we're working with. Example: 8 protons means we have oxygen, so this element has atomic number 8 on the periodic table

jimthompson5910:

The mass of an electron is so very small relative to a proton that electrons don't contribute much mass to the overall element. That's why we only consider protons and neutrons.

iuytyuioiuytyuiop:

thank you

jimthompson5910:

sure thing
