The Iconoclastic Controversy was an ongoing debate in churches in Byzantine in the 700s. Followers of Christianity in particular were unsure of the validity of the use of icons, that is the depiction of holy figures in a physical form, during worshipping. There were two sides of this debate: the iconophiles (the ones who supported icons) and the iconoclasts (the ones who rejected them). Iconoclasts said that not only did the abhorrence of icons appear in the second commandment of the Hebrew bible, but that God is beyond the mortal ability to depict. They also rejected other uses of icons that may have not necessarily been made to depict God, like candles, as that would still be worshipping something in place of God Himself. Iconophiles argued that depictions of God were not meant to detract from his holiness but rather that the people using these icons were worshipping the God that is depicted, rather than the depiction itself. They sometimes also argued instances in the bible where God demanded icons be made of him, like the cherubim in Exodus 25:18. The debate would eventually be resolved with iconophiles emerging as the victor, hence why depictions of God, Jesus, and other figures in the bible are commonplace if not unavoidable.
