@vocaloid

Vocaloid:

ok, this is multiplication and division, so our sig fig rules are different. now we want our answer to match the lowest number of **significant digits** (if you don't understand this, I'll explain) First problem: 971.2 / 0.59 971.2 has 4 significant figures, 0.59 has 2 significant figures, so your answer needs 2 sig figs. round 1646 to 1600 as your solution

Mathplayer223:

so 16?

Mathplayer223:

oh nevermind its 1600

Mathplayer223:

what about the other two problems

Vocaloid:

Problem 2 looks good Problem 3: since 25. has 2 sig figs, round 1952 to 20. * 10^2 (that period after the 0 is important, it makes the last 0 significant)

Vocaloid:

I'll just drop this here to explain sig figs in more detail https://www.nku.edu/~intsci/sci110/worksheets/rules_for_significant_figures.html

Mathplayer223:

20 is the answer?

Mathplayer223:

Vocaloid:

In order to write 1952 as 2 sig figs, we have to use scientific notation we can't round to 2000 because that's only 1 sig fig. putting a decimal at the end makes 4 sig figs. so we have to use 20. * 10^4 make **sure** to put that decimal after 20 otherwise it's only 1 sig fig

Vocaloid:

actually hold on sorry

Vocaloid:

if we re-write 2000 as 2.0 * 10^3 instead, it'll have 2 sig figs

Mathplayer223:

Vocaloid:

yeah

Mathplayer223:

Vocaloid:

1600 = 1.6 * 10^3 if they insist on scientific notation
