Astrid1:

A substance is dissolved in water, and the temperature of the surroundings decreases. Is this process exothermic or endothermic? Explain your reasoning in 3-5 sentences. I know the answer is endothermic but I can't think of a way to explain it. I oh so very much had not taken notes on it, thinking I did.

Astrid1:

Ok, now I am clearly confusing myself between endothermic and exothermic. Please help.

QuestionCoveBot:

Do you have the definition of both written down?

MaxyDaKid:

Endothermic means that less energy is generated when water molecules attach to the solute than is utilized to tear the solute away. Because less energy is released than is consumed, the solution's molecules move more slowly, causing the temperature to fall.
